Lubaina Himid, Painter
“I want to have a conversation. My way of getting conversation going, or getting people to take action, is by drawing them in and saying: ‘You bring your baggage, your opinion, your life and I’ll bring mine – and let’s try to talk about it.’ I don’t see the point, otherwise.” Painter, British artist curator & Professor of Contemporary Art Lubaina Himid (MBE) told The Guardian. Lubaina Himid is the oldest and first non-white woman Turner Prize recipient. She was born on July 25, 1954. Her art uncovers marginalized & silenced histories, figures & events. She aims to illustrate “the contribution black people have made to cultural life in Europe for the past several hundred years” and as a curator is committed to showing the work of underrepresented contemporaries, particularly black and Asian women.
